Folate also named folic acid or vitamin B9 belongs to the family of B-vitamins. Folic acid indicates the synthetic form of this vitamin, which is also used in food supplements.

A latent deficiency of folic acid is popular, because the folic acid loss can account up to 100 % by industrial processing of food and up to 75 % by cooking. Therefore, coverage of the folic acid need with normal diet is almost impossible.

Common symptoms in case of a folic acid deficiency are mood swings, paleness, loss of appetite and forgetfulness. But this can also result in hair loss, skin problems, depressive moods, anaemia, regression of mucous membranes with following and inflammations of the mucosa in the gastro-intestinal tract (stomach problems, diarrhoea, inflammations of the oral mucous or similar) or urogenital tract as well as strokes. A folic acid deficiency in pregnant women is supposed to increase the rate of premature births and miscarriages as well as result in neural tube defects (spina bifida) in infants.

Folic acid is mainly active inside the cells. It takes part in formation of hereditary material (DNA) and thereby in cell division and all growth and healing processes. Furthermore, folic acid has together with vitamin B6 and B12 the ability to decompose the toxic amino acid homocysteine. Homocysteine results within the protein metabolism in the body itself. It is understood as cytotoxin which inter alia can attack the vascular walls resulting in faster accumulation of the oxidised LDL cholesterol and thereby in a long-term narrowing of the blood vessels and arteriosclerosis – the conditions for heart attack and stroke. Due to its toxicity, the homocysteine has to be degraded immediately, but this is not possible without folic acid.

The effect of folic acid on persons who are prone to strokes shows a study, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. As test persons were applied 20.000 adults suffering from high blood pressure (important risk factor for stokes) which have never experienced a stroke or heart attack in their life. All study participants received a medicine against blood pressure for intake. The half of the study participants took additionally to this medicine 0,8 mg (800 microgram) folic acid daily. Over a period of 5 years (from 2008 to 2013) the study participants were monitored by doctors. The additional folic acid was able to reduce the risk of stroke as significantly as over the mentioned period in the folic acid group only 282 people suffered a stroke, whereas  in the other group not taking folic acid, it were 355.

Folic acid also plays an important role for pregnant and breastfeeding woman and women with acute wish to have children. Because folate/folic acid

    • contributes to the growth of the placenta during pregnancy.
    • minimizes the risk of possible neural tube defects in the embryo.
    • reduces the risk of autism in the baby.
    • decreases the rate of premature births and miscarriages.

This is probably the reason why not only pregnant and breastfeeding women but also women with acute wish to have children take a food supplement with folic acid. Especially women who wish to become pregnant quickly after stopping their intake of birth control pill should first controlled and if necessary increase their folic acid level and only then become pregnant. On long-term the birth control pill leads to a low folic acid level (at 30 % of all users) and therefore to a higher risk of neural tube defects in the embryo, autism in the baby and increase in the rate of premature births and miscarriages.

Beside the birth control pill, there are further medicines which inhibit the absorption or destroy the effect of folic acid e.g. drugs against epilepsy, ASS, dehydration tablets, diabetic medicine, medicine against Chrohn’s disease, ulcerating colitis and polyarthritis, methotrexate in case of chemotherapy or rheumatism, antibiotics.

LIVSANE Folic Acid Plus contains 400 µg folic acid and other important B-vitamins, which cover the daily need between 150 and 200 %. For an optimal supply of the body with folic acid and other important B-vitamins. The tablets are mini-tablets so they can easily be swallowed. Due to the small size of the tablets they can be taken discreetly. Ideal for on the go due to the practical and small click dispenser packaging. Produced in Germany.
